Really awesome post.
Every once in awhile, Bobcat's "that didn't hurt" will pop into my mind. Thanks, I've been wondering for years where that came from.
Apologies for not making it over here more often : /

I remember our family vacation up to Mt. Rushmore when I was in junior high or so. Driving through the Badlands with my nose in a book...the novelization of Empire actually, so even a book I had read before. My Dad kept trying to get me to look up and see the stunning landscape. "Yup, I see it." Sigh.

I try to make Norah walk with me on a nature trail each time we go to the park. It's not exactly hiking...but I really don't want her to loose sight of the beauty of the woods for love of climbing equipment. But that's probably a loosing battle for a while.

I can't recall whether the Goldthwaite pratfalls were part of a Police Academy movie, but I remember them awfully well now, too. (Except, apparently, for which movie they were in.) I enjoyed his comedy more than it seems I should have. Quirky characters with unique speech patterns don't normally get that popular. I liked him quite a bit in "Scrooged". (But anyway, that's all tangential, and you KNOW how I always insist on staying on topic in your posts!)

Simon - I was partial to the first one, too. I just wish more of the leaf was in focus. Need a little bit tighter aperture on that one -- but that would have required a slower shutter speed, so it's a trade-off. There were a few other shots of the read leaves, but not so many that my result was pure luck.

We, too, laugh at the, "I'm okay," response by kids after they experience a mishap. Reminds me of Bobcat Goldthwaite's character in a (Police Academy?) movie repeatedly mumble-shouting "that didn't hurt!" while falling.

The cuteness of your son notwithstanding, Mark, that first pic is certainly impressive. You do have a good eye for those sorts of things. Or you take enough shots that some are bound to out-shine the duds, eh? ;) If you don't tell, nobody will ever be the wiser!

Your third audio clip was the one that resonated with me the most. Every single day in our house there is at least one incident that involved a THUD!, followed (mostly quickly) with a follow up of, "I'm OK!" If there's too much of a delay between, either my wife or I will know there's gonna be a hurt boy. But normally it just results in an amused parent.

Good times!

Dave - Thanks.

My voice appears occasionally, but it's usually very loud compared to everything else because the mics are clipped on right next to my ears (on my glasses). I actually cut my response out of the one where Benjamin trips. I spoke to him between when I heard the grunt and when he whined (very briefly!) and said, "I'm okay."

Regarding your rationale for buying a digital SLR... you'd be surprised at the results you can get with a point-and-shoot. Your results depend largely on your priorities and what you notice while you're in a scenic spot.
