I too cut my teeth with Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance and then spent most of my youth in the trenches of sci-fi, occasionally venturing out for some non-fiction, but even then it was probbaly realted to quantum physics or some equally sci-fi concept. Since January, I've been trying to steer clear of any of my old traps...attempting to find the joys in all that literature i was supposed to be reading while earning my English degree ;)

I leave for my mom's house tomorrow. So, if I don't talk to you before then, have a great fourth! And I'm happy to hear Canada went so smashingly for you, Si.

(Man... somebody shut me up. I can wax grandiloquent when a beloved subject gets raised, eh? Good thing this post wasn't about books AND Star Wars. I would never have stopped typing.)

Canada Day was great up here for us hosers, thanks very much. Heartburn from eating way too much, and the boys actually stayed awake until after 11 PM to watch the fireworks. Strangely, they both fell asleep in the truck as we drove home from our friend's house. Musta been tired or something.

This post of yours, Mark, makes me think that it's only been relatively recently that I got away from the genre that got me started in reading. I was (and still am) an avid fantasy reader for many years. I remember that my dad bought me the first three novels of Piers Anthony's "Xanth" series for Christmas some time back in the '80s, and I progressed through Forgotten Realms books, and the Dragonlance series, among a myriad of others. For the longest time I didn't allow myself to stray at all from where I felt most comfortable, and fantasy (which is really no different from any other genre in this respect) has far more dross than gold in its repertoire.

I think I accidentally read a Sci-Fi novel once, and that got me started in my non-fantasy reading. Then, once I fully realised how much more there was out there, and that I could read other types of literature without feeling like I was betraying my first love, I felt much more comfortable (even eager) to explore. Hell, delving into new, unexplored, and unexpected literary avenues is one of the most exciting things a person can do!

I just this week started on the copy of "Great Expectations" you gave me in May before we left your place. On top of that, I got a package in the mail yesterday (I LOVE getting packages in the mail!) that consisted of my recent book order: The Omnivore's Dilemma (Moksha's suggestion pushed me over the edge to order it), A Short History of Nearly Everything (which I've heard so many good things about), and a philosophy book by Nietzche (so I can justify my obvious moral superiority with greater eloquence).

Books FTW!

I'm wondering when you're going to get around to reading Callahan's Crosstime Salloon that I mentioned a long time ago! *LOL*

Great reviews though... not that I'd read any of those (just not my cup of tea I guess)
