Regular Life

In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on. – Robert Frost

Where the Downhill Boys Go

Sometimes with all the technology we possess, we forget what fun a simple wagon can be. Kids keep us mindful of that. Then, of course, I use all the technology at my disposal to make a short music video of the event.

The original clips are of low quality, from Shannon’s point-and-shoot digital camera, but the song is a fun track from the LittleBigPlanet game soundtrack.

This fun was had in my parents’ pasture just south of the home where I lived from age 2 to 18, where we now return for family holidays (the house, not just the pasture).

  1. It’s funny to watch all the adults stand around with cameras. I think they’re having more fun than the kids!

I watched a kid last night, maybe 9 play with a big cardboard box and have fun with it for at least 30 minutes before I had to leave. Ahhh… the good ole days.

  3. Wonderful video, Mark. For some reason, it wouldn’t load on my Vista laptop at home. Odd. But the simple joy of a wagon is not to be underestimated. Lutine may love her Penguins of Madagasgar cartoon, but we spent at least half an hour yesterday slinging her around the kitchen floor on Arlo’s doggie bed. When bedtime came and she was asked to name something that made her happy that day, she didn’t mention a cartoon, she told about sliding on the floor with Daddy. Sometimes I think the problem is less with “kids today” so much as that the “simple” pleasures are more work for us parents (poor uphill guy.) The tempation to make my peace with TV time is often great when I’m feeling stressed and behind schedule. But, wagon time will always stick with a child more than one more viewing of WALL-E.

  4. How fun. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the family frivolity and listening to that sound track. Thanks!
