Unlocked (Pic of the Week)
Posted in General Thoughts, Pic of the Week on Jan 25th, 2008
Thanks to all who answered my call for help on Thursday’s post. I think I came to some of the same conclusions in a comment or two that a few of you pointed out later, but no problem. It turns out that all the repetition moved me to action.
If you read yesterday’s post, can you guess from the pictured tools what I did?

While Shannon and I admitted to each other that we could see the sense in school uniforms — even in public schools — I asked her to excuse me and dashed out to the garage to grab my Vise-Grips and a small flathead screwdriver.
Standing over the kitchen island, I clamped a Vise-Grip over the indentation on the inside of the knife handle so that it pushed down the long blade that was still folded in. That lifted the locking mechanism slightly, but didn’t allow me to budge the knives. So, I worked the tiny screwdriver into the only side of the locking mechanism that allowed room for it. I pried, and then I was able to fold down the remaining blades.
All of this took me a grand total of five minutes, and I didn’t bleed a single drop.
After that, I was able to flip a single blade into the locked position and then push down on the others to release the lock. It worked great.
Whew. All it took to fix this tool was… another tool. And then another. Hmmm… but it was so much more fun making a video.
My wife says this week I’ve made this a guy’s blog. Well, sometimes we men have to stick together.
Have a great weekend, all!

Congrats on getting it to work. As soon as I read what Charles had to say yesterday, I knew he had the answer. I’ve seen that particular tool before now that I think of it.
What’s wrong with a “guy’s blog”? It IS your blog isn’t it? I’m hoping she was just kidding around with you.
Have a great weekend.
In my house, I do the home improvement stuff! And I like the last close up! Tools would be a great subject to shoot I think….you just gave me some ideas!
Have a good weekend!
Mark, your comment towards the beginning of this post regarding school uniforms is making my brain hurt. How does that have anything to do with the rest of the sentence that is trying to contain it, let alone the rest of the post?
Perhaps that’s what you and Shannon just happened to be talking about when you felt the irresistable pull to retrieve tools from the garage? What the hell?!
Anyway, I’m awfully glad that you remedied your multi-tool situation and that all, again, is back to normal. Or as close to normal as it gets.
I had to read the school uniform part a few times as well. I think you hit it, Simon…it’s just the conversation Mark interupted with his mad dash for his tool fixin’ tools.
Glad we could be of service, Mark…although I’m slightly sad we won’t get to work on this particualr problem in May ;) Also, I think Anna is on to something. The colors and angles of the tools make for much more interesting shots than I would had expected.
Threcheers for Man blogs….mlogs if you will (cuz English just needs more uses of the ml combination)
Dave - She’s just not being entertained in this space right now, and felt the need to lash out.
Anna - You husband probably loves that you do the home improvement stuff. Handywomen are hot.
After looking at my first tool pic, I admit that I liked it and that’s why I added the other two here. I look forward to seeing Anna’s Tool series (except you might not want to name it that, because, well, it just sounds weird).
Simon - I was trying to convey how my projects often start — from inspiration wrapped in a seemingly unrelated conversation. For those who haven’t been around me much, it can be jarring. It seems I got the message across. It went kind of like this, “Keep talking, I’m just going out to the garage to get something.”
Moksha - I was writing mine as you wrote yours, but you beat me to the Post button. Your explanation was spot-on.
Mlog. Sweet.
I take a little credit for the lighting and the angles. The pictures are uncropped and I used my cable that allows me to freehand my flash away from my camera while shooting. I still feel I could have accentuated the locking grooves in the blades a little better, but it was late.
You know that I am totally going to do that Mark! I will have to come up with a good title!
My husband loves to ask me to fix things….
MEN! :)
No bloodshed…that’s the key. I’m glad to hear that you got it working.
We were at mom and dad’s last night, and I told him about your post and video (he said they typically run about a week behind reading it). I told him I was concerned that you might end up taking off a finger like him before the saga was over.
He told me that they were planning a trip to your area pretty soon, and that he’d try to see if he could help when he was down. Then he informed me that I have one of those contraptions too, because he remembered buying them at Wal-Mart one year before Christmas. So…apparently, I have one buried somewhere, and if I ever run across it, now I’ll now what not to do.
The pictures really do look cool. Who’da thunk it? As you explained though, it might be a bad idea for someone to have a blog post entitled “tool pictures” up on Monday morning.
Sunday’s Blog hit total: 29
Monday’s total: 290,000
Porn…it’s here to stay.
Wow…that sounded brutal. I meant that you might end up taking off a finger TIP like dad.
I’m a day late…dollar short as usual. But wanted to let you know the addition of that video was great!
