Local donut shop could work on its name a bit.

They finally did it.

Some may recall my ongoing quest to find the donut of my wife’s desire. No, we don’t eat donuts very often — maybe a couple times a month. When we do, however, Shannon wants hers filled with white creme, not that Bavarian creme or custard or whatever each shop calls it.

For the first two years (and change) that we’ve lived in the suburbs north of Dallas, I’ve visited various fried-dough establishments, only to find that Krispy Kreme has cornered the market on this type of donut. Longjohn, eclair, it doesn’t matter what name you give it. No locally owned place even has white creme on the premises.

I’ve never detected any vegetable oil in the coffee.

Finally, on a recent trip to the shop pictured here (less than a mile from our house), I looked at their sign behind the counter listing their fillings. The only hand-scrawled entry was all caps and said, “WHITE.” Yes!! They now have the best donut filling.

I think this is in part thanks to their new affiliation with Daylight Donuts, which started in Tulsa and now has more than 900 retail outlets nationwide.

For accounts of my donut quest, read the links below:

I hear why they don’t have white creme donuts, and then make a fool of myself (because I hadn’t already, right?).

Another leg of my quest.

Van Halen

If you’re reading this on Thursday night, then Alvis and I are sleeping in Tulsa (in separate beds, ya crazies). If you’re reading Friday morning, then we’re en route from Tulsa to Kansas City. We’ll be seeing Van Halen with my brother, with whom I’ve seen the band four times already (1984, 5150, Monsters of Rock, and whatever they called the tour in 2004.) David Lee Roth is back with the band and I’ve heard samples of the show that sound pretty good to me. Eddie is still amazing on the axe, and it will be great to hear my favorite Van Halen songs live again.

While I rejoice at your donut happiness..I just don’t understand how you can put forth so much effort trying to find such an…icky filling. That’s right, I said it. I’ve held my tongue through all these donut quest accounts, but I can remain silent no longer. The white filling is nasty and the Dallas region has it exactly right by offering nothing but the custard. In fact, it seems the only store that does offer this horrid flavor, is so ashamed of their business practices that they removed their own name from the front door. Telling…I think.

Pffeew. Glad to get that off my chest. But really…I’m happy for you ;)

Would a coffee been be considered a vegetable?

Never mind about the WHITE filling… why the heck does the store close at noon every day?

And unlike Moksha, I don’t think the filling is as evil as he makes it out to be. True, I do prefer the custard-y filling anyway, but I do LIKE the white filling. Then again, I also like Cool-Whip, and that’s nothing but an edible oil product anyway.

    Mmmmm… edible oil…. and doughnuts…

I’m with Moksha….hate, yes hate, the white filling. Too sweet. But, that’s why there are different strokes right?

Is that the donut shop that is just down from the Sonic and the Home Depot? Has it got wooden floors, and is run by Asians? Because if it isn’t, the place I just described has the white filling too. We forgot to share that with you on our last visit. We laughed about it, because we stopped in there on our way to your house, and Amanda got a white creme filled donut. I was thinking, “Mark and Shannon have had an ongoing quest to find creme filling, with no success, and we happened upon this donut shop right near your house, and they had it. :-) I can’t believe we forgot to tell you that. Based on the crowd there…no one…I think maybe we expected it to be shut down soon.

Van Halen was AWESOME, as they always have been. If they’re still alive and do another reunion tour, I’ll go again, and pay even more next time. And naturally, you’ll have to go with me. It’s a brotherly tradition!

Moksha and Simon - Now I have three food items I must eat with you two when we all meet in the spring. Simon’s grandmother’s pancakes, peanut butter toast with chocolate chips, and a white creme-filled donut.

Charles - I laughed when I just read your comment, since you and I are in adjoining rooms in a motel at this moment. Too funny.

I can’t believe you guys forgot to tell us about the donuts! It is the same shop I wrote about in this post. Oh well. That shop is always very busy on Saturday and Sunday morning. I have no idea what kind of volume they do on other days, or as it gets closer to their closing time. The number of houses out there is rising fast, so I’m sure they’ll keep getting more customers. I hope so. It’s become a tradition for Ben and I to go there a couple times a month. He and I eat our donuts there while Shannon sleeps in a little back at the house.

Van Halen was, indeed, AWESOME. I would probably go again, and pay about the same or a little more. I can’t think of another concert where I would know EVERY song by heart (not even the Sammy version of Van Halen). That makes it a much better experience. Well, OK, I knew every Prince song by heart when I saw him several years ago (almost 10 — wow, getting too old).

Excellent news on the donuts! Shan must be proud.. *LOL*

Have fun at the concert guys!

Dave - Read the comments above yours for a brief report on the concert.

All right, now, there’s no need to get so ugly about something so close to my heart (ahem, Moksha). I’m just glad there is more delicious white creme filling in the world for me now. Oh, and Charles, I’ll deal with you later for knowing they had white creme and not divulging this information to us. That’s just plain cruel. Why are you guys out to get me and my beloved white creme???
