For some reason these pics make me think of “pretty bird”. Which of course makes me think of that scene in Dumb and Dumber where that poor blind boy was given a dead bird with its head taped back on.
Those are great birds, especially in flight. We have an island marked off for these here on the river, but the ones I’ve seen tend to be more white with black. This blue one looks amazing.
We saw these a lot in Florida. We called them Charlie Birds since that’s what the six year old girl at the lake house called them. They’re probably protected, but nothing is safe from Mark’s lens. Good snaps!
Bird: Great Blue Heron (good call, Dave)
Location: Small lake/large pond behind my in-laws’ house in the Dallas metroplex (in a suburb, but not way out in the country)
Date: June 24, 2007
Camera: Nikon D100
I got as close as I could with my 70-210mm lens (105-315mm on my D100), and planned to try an in-flight shot. He spooked sooner than I had hoped, and flew with his back to me. In the second picture, that half-rotted branch above and in front of him was his perch. You can see a large piece of equipment from a major construction project in the background.
I must say, I somewhat agree with Simon about folks posting their WW entry on Tuesday night instead of Wednesday. But, for those who are early to bed and early to rise, who don’t make time for anything but rushing out the door in the morning, I can understand. Plus, when I go to the main WW site and find more than 150 submissions by 11 p.m. (Central time) Tuesday night, I feel like I’ve already missed the bus.
Everybody - Thanks for the comments and for coming back here for WW. I get to at least yours and a few other WW’s each week.
Simon - You know, I still haven’t seen Dumb and Dumber.
Émilie B - You might be seeing a Great White Heron, a morph of the Great Blue. But, it might be a Great Egret.
Josh - They’re protected, for sure. I may or may not know a guy who killed and ate one while on a canoe trip.
Great timing, Mark. They’re just such magestic birds.
I suppose I could defend myself over on my site…but I’ll just continue the discussion here, instead. I started posting my WW early for the exact reasons you list. Rushed morning and a sense that by 10 PM on Tuesday you’re already behind. I’d set up a timed post so that it’d go up at 12:01 am…but I don’t think Blogger offers that. Thus…I post before I go to bed.
In addition, now that I know it bugs Simon…I might be tempted to post a WW next Monday night. ;)
I’m completely stunned that you’ve never seen Dumb and Dumber. I remember you telling me that, but I’d forgotten. Definitely needs to be a goal on our vacation. Of course it may not be as funny when I’m reciting every line from memory. Just kidding…I wouldn’t do that.
The pictures are cool. I see a few of them every year, and surprisingly, I have seen more cranes of various types in the past few years.
That bird is awesome looking!! Great shot!
Gah!
Same comment as for Moksha.

Holy cow! Great shots!
Beautiful pictures. Happy WW.
Beautiful pics… is that a Blue Heron?

I’m early with the details today.

I really like the framing of that first shot Mark. Nice job. What an interesting bird.
Great capture! Thanks for sharing and Happy WW.
Smiles and Blessings,

Happy WW and excellent work.
Wow, nice shot!
Nice photo. We actually had one of these stop at our little pond a couple of years ago. Must have been way off course, but we enjoyed watching him.
Mark, it’s OK that you haven’t yet seen Dumb and Dumber. You’re friends with me and Moksha.
(And I think we both know which one HE is!)
