Welcoming Life (Pic of the Week)
Shannon, Ben, and I went to the hospital yesterday to welcome Alvis’ and his wife’s latest contribution to the gene pool. I mean, to see that cute baby they made.
Above is the view I had on my drive home (I was in the minivan with Ben, because I had handed Shannon the keys to the convertible for her girls’ night out.) Clicking it will give you a larger version, and the back button will get you back here.
Born March 26 at 7:45 a.m., the baby’s name is William, and he doesn’t seem to mind having his arms and eyes wide open. All those unfamiliar with a baby that fresh from the mommy might not know that they like to be wrapped in what we affectionately yet somewhat disturbingly call the “baby burrito.”
Here’s the proud dad, with proud mom in the background. Proud big brother is not in the shot. He left with his grandparents shortly after I arrived.
Shannon held William, with Ben looking on.
Congratulations to Alvis and his family. We consider them part of ours.

Congrats Alvis and Mrs. Alvis!!!!!
It’s always nice to see nice people have good things happen! ~S~
Have a great weekend all…
Lotta hair on that kid! I know Alvis will come over here to read the comments on this particular post, but it’s the least I can do to go over there and say hi too.
Wow…seems William already has more hair than his Daddy. Impressive.
Dave - You, too!
Simon - Very hairy. What is it “they” say? Women with lots of heartburn during pregnancy are going to have a baby with lots of hair, I think.
Moksha - Funniest comment on any blog anywhere today.
I love babies with lots of hair.
I always thought it was unfair to take snaps of the new mother - the first days and hours post-baby are not your most photogenic. Fortunately, the happiness usually outweighs the ugly exhaustion.
Wow, Shannon looks awfully comfortable (and radiant!) holding that yiddle bebe. ;-) And Woo Hoo, I finally get to see what Alvis looks like. Radiant also!
Mark, that picture of the sky is gorgeous. This may sound morbid, but I don’t see it that way… Every time I see a sky like that with the sunlight streaming through the clouds, someone I know has died. It freaked me out when I first noticed it but I’ve decided to think of it as kind of a welcoming sign to the departed into Heaven. It’s comforting in a way. It appeals to that little bit of me that still wants to believe in Heaven.
Linda’s thought was very interesting to me. When we went into the funeral director’s office to plan my Dad’s services, there was an enormous photo on the wall almost exactly like your photo. The only difference was a small house and barn in the bottom corner. I got chicken skin.
Off to visit Alvis.
Jay - And yet, those women don’t seem to mind at all — maybe because they’re finally not pregnant anymore!
Linda - I’ve never heard that. Maybe for me it happens every time someone is born. Hmm…
Blitz - I got a shot of the same thing that day with something in the foreground, but not a picturesque as what you described. Instead, I got a big, white SUV and some power lines.
Mark, it sounds from your comment that maybe you misunderstood me, it’s not something I’d “heard”, just a personal observation. It would be interesting though to research maybe Native American Legend or Mythology or something to see if there is something significant about a sight like this, kind of along the lines of what a full Moon or eclipse or other natural phenomena signifies. In that respect, your observation would make more sense than my own, being that the streams are coming down from Heaven as opposed to going up. Hmmm. At any rate, it’s a rilly rilly beautiful sight. Much like little William :-)
Mark and Linda - I think the rays of light shinnig through the clouds have often been used to represent Heaven. I had just assumed everyone had that connotation when seeing such an image. Do a Google Image search for Heaven + Light and you’ll get several such images. None so lovely as yours, Mark…but enough to prove Linda isn’t crazy (on this particular issue, anyway).
To all: These are some very nice comments. This is my first opportunity to get over here in several days, as you might imagine.
Mokker, I just read this on Monday. I forgive you ;-)
