Haven’t Drunk a Drop
It’s New Year’s Eve, and I sit here with the last scene from “The Breakup” playing in the background. Shannon’s family sits rapt (she and I didn’t watch because we were preparing Ben for bed). Vince Vaughan is a very funny guy.
Ever since we got married 14 years ago, Shannon and I have spent every New Year’s Eve with her family. It’s always been fun, but what happens in Tulsa stays in Tulsa.
Her stepdad, who used to be her Uncle (don’t ask unless you’re sitting down), typically plays bartender, blending up frozen margaritas and piña coladas while knocking back his favorite wine. He’s been known to sip a single-malt Scotch (Glenlivet, I believe), a Christmas gift traditionally given him by one of his brothers in-law (who remained related to him in exactly the same way after he moved from Shannon’s uncle to her stepdad, if that helps anybody figure out how that worked). He’s a true master and just keeps taking requests for the next blender-full.
It’s already 9:48, and none of the previous paragraph has occurred this year yet. There’s still time.
I’ve already said this once, but Happy New Year!
Update: I was gently corrected on this one. We have not spent every NYE with Shannon’s family. It just happens that way a lot because they always celebrate Christmas the Saturday following the 25th. Generally, I can work my schedule to just stay here through the New Year, but a few jobs of the past haven’t let that fly.
On one such occasion, I was running about a 102 fever and lay in quarantine downstairs while Shannon and our friends partied upstairs (with baby Ben). I watched Holes, because I had read the book, and some other movie.
I don’t remember what the other exceptions were, but I’m sure the little lady will be glad to comment if so moved.
Oh, and sometimes Shannon’s Uncle J (who without violating any laws could never be anything else to her) plays bartender. He’s pretty good, too.

Just got back from a rum fueled karaoke-fest and wanted to take a moment to say Happy New Year, my friend, before I turned in.
… and I would fit in nicely there, how??? ;-)
I added an upate to the end of this post.
It seems I was remiss on a few points.
Gee, I would have been none the wiser… (always wanted to say that and never found the opportunity.) And I don’t mean that I wouldn’t have know you updated, I meant that I wouldn’t have known you hadn’t spent every New Years with Shannon’s family. You know what they say; Ignorance is Bliss. And there I was, being all blissful… Was.
Can you put a preview button up so I can catch my typos???
A very happy new year to Ben and his parents. No matter where they are I’m sure it’s bound to be a good time!
Linda - I like the concept of a Preview button, but I’ve never checked into it for Wordpress. I’ll poke around a little.
Simon - Same to ya! And, yes, we have a ripping good time, chap.
Sounds like a good time was had by all.. *S*
The loving wife and I celebrated our last New Year on Dec 31st of 1987. She was 1 month pregnant with our first and we spent the evening with my best man and his wife at a place in Orlando called Studebakers. A good time was had by all and we never went out or to another New Year’s party since.
Mark, I like the new comment features. In response to the question you had about my comments, I’ve tried to figure out why my site allows both types of blogger logins and can’t find a thing. It is a nice feature that many of the blogger sites I visit don’t have for some reason. It may be that I had used the beta version from the start and have always used a google login. So I guess the real answer is I’m clueless.
