Break from Vacation

Ben thrills to the excitement of sitting in wet sand, sans Daddy.
(Note to “Apartment Life” readers. No installment today. I already have much of the next chapter in my head, so stay tuned.)
For just a few fleeting hours, I took a vacation from the vacation today.
My original intent was to go to the Padre Island National Seashore with the same crowd that went back out to the beach late Monday afternoon — Shannon, her mom, Aunt D, and Ben. At the last minute, as they loaded the last of our picnic lunch supplies into the cooler, I backed out. I figured I would just sit around for a couple hours or so and take it easy. It’s the kind of thing I enjoy immensely when I get a chance.
The others who stayed behind seemed to have the same thing in mind.
Turns out I missed some fun, but nothing I couldn’t look at in pictures and video.
Tonight, we went to Port Aransas at about 5:30 and found most of the shops and several of the restaurants closed. We managed to find a place adjacent to a marina on the ship channel between the Gulf of Mexico and Corpus Christi Bay. There were no windows and the breeze felt great at 77 degrees. I had the catch of the day, amberjack, grilled and topped with butter sauce.
Ben was great at the beach, from what I hear, and when he and I napped together. I never imagined how delightful it would be to have a child in my life. He gives me an excuse to do all the weird things I already did, anyway, like dance to whatever comes on the radio or the TV, speak in various accents, make up goofy song lyrics, and make faces.
More than that, though, he calls me, and only me, Daddy.

Wheww…I’m hungry, and there’s Benjamin offering me a bite of sandwich right there on the beach. Looks almost like a Turkey and Cheese in either a Pita or a Bun. Every time I see a Pita sandwich it reminds of how good those Stoby’s Pita Tunas were in college…mmm, mmm.
Tonight LC poo’d in the potty, and the minute he was finished, he ran to mom and said, “Mommy…we have to call daddy at the motel and tell him I’m a big boy again today.”
I hope you’re enjoying your family time, and getting to do at least a little of the things you like to do.
Oh yeah…how was the Amberjack? Man…I really am hungry.
Yep, sometimes you just need time to unwind….
and yeah, I know what you mean about having your child call you “Daddy”….
Thank goodness, so far everything went well with my son last night. It was ultimatum time…. *sigh*
Now, when I share stuff with him, my older one nearly always says, “Thanks, Daddy.” Very nice to hear that.
Charles - He ate ham and cheese on a wheat bun, no mean feat considering he doesn’t usually get into any sandwich besides PB&J. Mmmm… Stoby’s. Yum.
The amberjack was very good. A little fishier than Shannon’s mahi-mahi, but good.
Yay for LC!
Dave - Glad things went well in the first round. :-)
Simon - Cool. Very cool.
