Portrait of a Saturday

Published by Mark Williams under Kids, Photography, True Story

We went Saturday to have Ben’s three-year portraits made, if a little late. We don’t think he’s changed much in the past couple of months, so we’re fudging a bit.
The day didn’t start well. Ben woke up very early and although he said he was hungry, he ate only a few clusters of cereal. He [...]

Strenuous (Pic of the Week)

Grasshumpers
I shot the above photo in the spring of 2005, at our house in Missouri. These two were not shy at all. They put it all out there for everyone to see.
With that same attitude, Shannon and I are trying something that we’ve never done in 14 years of marriage. I would call it an [...]

History of Shame?

Published by Mark Williams under Culture & Society

I’ve noticed that a lot of African-Americans have the last name Williams. I know it’s a very European name, so it makes me wonder whether a lot of people named Williams owned slaves. I’ve never heard stories of people in my family who did, but I have a feeling that’s mostly because there’s not much [...]

The Sound of One Book Closing

On lunch hours at work I’m reading The Closing of the American Mind, which is pretty good so far, but reads a lot like a thesis. I just hole up in one corner of our break room, with either my canned (and fully cooked) tuna and crackers, or my smoked turkey with provolone sandwich, my [...]

The Princess and the Key

Published by Mark Williams under Kids, Marriage, True Story

Some of you may remember a little Robert Burns quote that graced these pages not long ago. All about plans and how they sometimes go awry (”gang aft a-gley,” but who’s counting?)
After work, I met with the wife at the “Y.” The plan was to put Ben in Child Watch, get our freak on get [...]

Remembering 9/11

Staffers from Gold’s Gym prepare to parade the outstretched American flag.
The above and the below are pictures I took the Saturday following 9/11/2001. Bentonville, Arkansas had a parade to show its support for the country. I drove and walked around town with my trusty Nikon N8008s to commemorate the event.

Meeting Sushi

Published by Mark Williams under Food, True Story

Before I start, let me say I intend no disrespect to my in-laws. Each person has his or her own taste, and God love’em, they truly enjoyed this stuff.
For me, however, sushi has pushed everything down a notch to take the top spot on my “things to never put in my mouth again” list. You [...]

Shan of Ark (Pic of the Week)

Shannon cleans the sliding glass door at our last house in Arkansas.
This is the first house Ben called home. Oh, how I miss it. I had grand plans.

Bullnoser

Published by Mark Williams under General Thoughts

If you ever wake up feeling groggy and can barely find your way across your bedroom, I have a surefire way to wake yourself. It’s called the Bullnoser, and it’s free.

First Day of (Pre)School

Although Ben has insisted on doing many things himself, Tuesday he embarked on his first voyage toward independence. He went for his first day of preschool.

Ben gets excited about painting with watercolors.
