A Jumps (Pic of the Week)

I took this picture about 18 years ago, on top of a mountain about one mile outside my hometown’s city limits (as much as you can apply that term to a town of 5,000 people that’s the largest within a 30-mile radius and the biggest in the whole county).

I figured I would let readers form their own stories, or throw out questions. It has not been altered digitally or in any other way, except for the spot-cleaning of a few dust particles after scanning.

If Armstrong can take one small step for man in that bulky ol’ space suit, then I can sure as heck take a larger step right here on Earth. Waitaminnit! But since the moon is only a sixth the size of Earth, and there is an inverse linear relationship between the size of any celestial body and its associated gravitational force, that means I’m six times heavier on Earth than I would be on the moon and the force required to propel me over this gap – seemingly small by lunar standards – is actually quite intimidating in 1-G. Seems I’ve already committed myself to… Ayiiiiieeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

I can’t remember his name, but isn’t his first name Alan, and didn’t he play French horn in the band?

I don’t remember that particular gap on Surgarloaf, but if I had to guess, I’d say that this was one of those spots where the fall was only 10 or so feet. Still enough to do some severe damage, but not enough to feel like you would die.

I’m still amazed the Richie R. fell off of the TOP of Sugarloaf twice, and lived both times. Unbelievable.

We used to go climb it an night every now and then. Do you remember when there were rumors flying around about their being devil worshipers doing sacrifices on the top? I never saw them, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Dave – That is a great quote.

Chuck – Yep, same guy. Right name, too. I never saw the devil worshipers, either, but I remember the rumors. Another rumor I heard was that the KKK met there. Man, I’m going to get some interesting hits on my blog now, with all this terminology going around.

For everybody’s edification — he jumped right across there. I just happened to catch the instant that he bent his knee before springing upward and outward. He did it a few more times, too. I never would have done it, but I’m always glad to capture things like that on film (now memory card).
