Boys to Men

I have heard women accuse men of being nothing more than large boys. Certainly, both men and women possess some undesirable qualities easily attributed to mental and/or emotional immaturity. As a man, however, I cannot and most certainly should not speak to the female side of this topic. As the father of a boy, neither [...]

Pic of the Week (and license plates)

Redbud Reflection
I shot this scene Thursday night at the in-laws’ place. I took my camera to work this morning, knowing we were going to their house for supper, in hopes of catching some pics in the late sun. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to take pictures on sunny days.
I also captured [...]

Do You Like Music?

Published by Mark Williams under Music

Writing about music is like dancing about architecture — it’s really a stupid thing to want to do.
- Elvis Costello
After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

The Spice of Life

Published by Mark Williams under Kids

I’ve heard variety is the spice of life. Here’s a little “variety” that Ben has provided lately.
From timeout, repeating over and over: “I said no throwing.”
To a friend’s crying baby: “It’s okay,” in a patient, comforting tone.
Ten seconds later, after the crying resumed: “Baby, stop crying!” in an impatient, annoyed tone.

High in the Early ’60’s

“It’s about 44 degrees now, but we were in the early ‘60’s yesterday,” said a co-worker in Kansas City.
Apparently our Kansas City office has a time machine. Transfer me to that location — two years ago.
*dream sequence*
I go back in time and invest in Wal-Mart and our company during their respective nascencies. My riches keep [...]

My Buddy from the IRS

Published by Mark Williams under True Story

“It’s almost like west Texas out there.”
I looked over to see a wrinkled, smiling face atop a gaunt frame. He wore dentures. Nobody’s choppers are that white and straight at that age.
I forgot to bring my book, so I planned to people-watch when I arrived at Wendy’s. Surreptitious observation proves difficult in a sparsely populated [...]

Pic of the Week and Grammy

Hoar Frost
This was formed by a waterfall’s mist, and contrasts with the bare brown leaves on the hill. The location is about three miles from the house where I was reared.
Avenger’s Lament Concluded
I made the third installment of “Avenger’s Lament” double the length of the first two, so you may finish the story before the [...]

Where RV Now?

See my second installment of “Avenger’s Lament,” a tale set in the U.S. Civil War, over on A Storied Man.
Where RV Now?
Remember when the in-laws (I’m blessed with two sets) had all that RV trouble before they reached our house? They just returned home Sunday, 5-week trip now over, and they pulled into their driveway [...]

Married Single Dad

Published by Mark Williams under Kids, Marriage

I just posted a tale of vengeance and heartbreak, firmly rooted in history, called Avenger’s Lament. Enjoy it on my other blog. Meanwhile, see below for Regular Life.
******
Friday night through Monday, it was mostly just Ben and me.
Back at work today, I missed my boy.
While I normally get up with Ben on weekends, and do [...]

Healing has Begun

If you like sci-fi at all, check out my latest on A Storied Man. It has time travel, alternate history — and the answer to a huge unsolved mystery, all in under 1,000 words.
****
For the first time since all this started, I saw my mother-in-law (what is the proper way to hyphenate that, anyway?).
