Scooze Me

Published by Mark Williams at 11:11 pm under General Thoughts, Kids

I left town Thursday morning. Ben could not count to 10. He tried. “One, two, three, four… one, two, three. Six, seven, eight, nine.” That was about as good as it got.

When I returned Sunday night, Shannon said, “Count for Daddy.”

He counted items pictured on his cup, all the way to 16, and only 15 was questionable. He said it, “FIVEteen,” which is logical for a number sandwiched between FOURteen and SIXteen.

The human brain is the single most powerful thing in the known universe. It can love, hate, envy, mourn, admire, regret, fear — and reason. Millions all over the world carry a perfectly capable one around in their heads each day, but barely touch the surface of its capabilities. I hope that we can properly encourage our little boy to use what his brain has to offer.

Then we come to our next milestone over the weekend.

Shannon bathed Ben, as she is wont to do. Mommies sure are a drag in that way. Ben passed some gas that bubbled to the surface and, much to Shannon’s chagrin, the bubbles burst.

“Ugh, that’s stinky, Ben. What do you say?”

“Thank you, mommy.”

“No, you say excuse me.”

“Oh. Scooze me, mommy.”

Like I said, the human brain is… nevermind.

When Declan does it, it’s a big smile and a proclamation of, “Toot!”

When his parents do it, it’s a scrunched face and a hand waving in front to ward off the odour.

    Our kid’s a hypocrite.

Ben’s usual response is a big laugh, and I’m sure this time was no exception. Oddly, he laughed at them before we ever showed any response to them at all. What I don’t understand, though, is that I can let a room-clearer, and he doesn’t seem to notice at all. The kid’s not human.

    *LOL* Ben’s growing up allright….

But you need him to teach him to say “Who stepped on that Duck???”
