Being Dad

Published by Mark Williams at 1:20 am under General Thoughts, Kids

A whole day without seeing him.
Miss him.
Want to lift him out of sleep.

Wake up wanting to stay at home.
Trudge into work.
Cubicle pictures distract attention.

Read him a book.
Lift him high above my head.
Smile until my face muscles hurt.

Stifle laughs when he misbehaves.
Put him in timeout.
Mix emotions with structure.

Cry at the world he faces.
Turn to putty when he says, “Glad to see you.”

Be a man.
Be human.
Be a dad.

    Where is he?????

He was just in the next room sleeping. Thus the (somewhat unclear?) line “Want to lift him out of sleep.”

Since I’m gone for work before he wakes up, I only see the little guy every night for a couple hours before I put him to bed. Then I see him on the weekends. I know I’m spoiled compared to a lot of dads who have to travel a lot, but I wrote this post relative to my experience.
